Binatbatan
People congregated in designated areas after the streets were closed. The drums are hammering consistently and loudly. The street dancers wear colourful costumes and yell excitedly, "Viva Vigan!" The administrators employed street dance to honor the Binatbatan holiday, with students from several schools participating. They wave their "batbat" joyfully and joyously, some replicating Abel-weavers' method of separating cottons as they gracefully perform the process artistically to the beat of drums and lyres rolling through Vigan's heritage city's ancient streets. They also carry cotton pods gathered from the kapas sanglay tree in a basket on their backs. Because they honor the Abel Iloco hand-loom weaving industry, their uniforms are abel weaving inspired.
The Binatbatan Festival, which attracts tens of thousands of local and international visitors to its streets lined with ancestral homes, brings the history to life in a riot of colors. The Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts takes place every year from the last week of April to the first week of May. I am hoping that we will be able to commemorate this in the first week of May 2022. Many people are looking forward to street dancing, and I can say that festival celebrations are greatly missed.
